It’s that time of year. Time to replenish the kidding kit and get it in the barn. Kidding or birthing kits vary at every farm, so don’t feel bad if yours is different. This is the kit we use at the barn.
Here is what we have:
Towels- both paper and cloth
Blow drier- to dry a kid quickly
Iodine 7 % solution in a spray bottle- spray on umbilical cord- Keep in a Ziplock bag as they tend to leak
Alcohol for scissors sanitizing
Scissor-to cut cord if needed. We sometime have a mom that gets too aggressive chewing on the cord, so to avoid umbilical hernias we cut the cord about an inch from the kid’s navel.
J-Jelly Lube- In case you need to go in and rearrange a kid
Latex gloves
Baby nasal bulb- helps clear mouth and nose
Nutri drench- add to does water 4 pumps or pump into mouth for a quick pick up after kidding- also give to weak kids.
Laminated birthing position chart
Pritchard nipples (in case you have to bottle feed)
Plastic 8oz bottle for Pritchard nipple
Feeding tube with syringe- just in case you have to tube feed a weak kid. Read up on how to do it and or YouTube it.
Vitamin B Complex-can be given orally
Selenium & Vitamin E gel
